all the different parts of the farm are kept together, and where they are treated,
no manure is wasted. Agriculture takes of the dairy products. The members of the
family take a small allowance of the produce of the farm, and all the surplus go as
seed. By careful management, half of a farmer's profits can be kept as a surplus
over and above the expenses of a farm.
CHAPTER III.
The standards of the house, garden, and orchard.
We have looked at what can be produced, and now come to what should be produced,
in the way of flowers, herbs, and fruit. This is also a standard to which our garden should be maintained. Many of us,
however, have so very little time to look after this part of the garden, that we very
often try to get as much as we can from it and from the greenhouse. Then, again, it is so very easy to find something new, that we try to make one thing grow where another one does not grow, and so, by degrees, everything is neglected. We must therefore bear in mind the needs of all that we
grow, and our aim must be to produce as much as we can, from the least of the
accomplishments, in order to have a garden and orchard that will repay the best of care.
In saying this, we must not forget that in all cases, the last is not the best, but
that all depends upon the space you have, or, perhaps, the size of your money.
